The UBC Centre for Migration Studies is pleased to announce that the 2027 Bridging Divides annual conference will be held May 10-12, 2027, at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus.
This year, the conference theme is: Reimagining Migration Research and Relationships: Blurring Boundaries, Bridging Divides.
Contemporary societies are facing a poly-crisis of worsening climate change, rapid technological transformation, rising political polarization, and intensifying social inequalities. Migration both shapes and is shaped by these challenges. Responding to this moment requires new research questions, and new ways of producing, sharing, and mobilizing knowledge. How do we blur boundaries between researcher-driven and community-engaged work? How do we bridge divides between university-based research and policy or social impact?
Through panels, workshops, and interactive sessions, the conference will explore community-partnered scholarship, digital and AI-enabled methods, arts-based storytelling, creative knowledge mobilization, policy engagement, and decolonial approaches to migration research.
Migration Research in Minutes Competition
To foster learning, training, and professional development among graduate students and early-career scholars, CMS will host a Migration Research in Minutes Competition as part of the conference. Participants will have the opportunity to present their research in an engaging and accessible format to a broad audience.
