CMS Community Luncheon Brings Together Migration Researchers and Community

More than 50 faculty members, students, staff, and community partners came together on September 18 for the first Community Luncheon of the new academic year. It was a vibrant event celebrating the Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) and the growing community of scholars, practitioners, and partners advancing migration research.

The luncheon provided an opportunity for affiliates to connect across disciplines, build new relationships, and learn more about the exciting work taking place across the Centre. Attendees enjoyed engaging conversations, exchanged ideas, and explored opportunities for future collaboration in a welcoming and informal setting. Guests enjoyed a lunch provided by local vendor Mount Everest Kitchen and Grill.

CMS Co-directors Antje Ellermann and Irene Bloemraad opened the event with reflections on CMS’s accomplishments over the past academic year. Highlights included hosting 39 events, publishing 33 research and policy briefs, and supporting 34 students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Migration Studies. These achievements reflect CMS’s commitment to fostering innovative research, public engagement, and student training in migration studies.

Coordinators from each CMS Research Group introduced their areas of focus and shared highlights from ongoing initiatives. Attendees learned about projects ranging from community-engaged research to the International Art Competition, supported by contributions of more than 100 collective members. The presentations showcased the depth and diversity of migration-related research at CMS, and highlighted pathways for new, interdisciplinary connections among affiliates.

With more than 300 affiliates, CMS continues to be a dynamic hub for migration research, policy engagement, and community connection. If you would like to become part of this growing network and stay informed about upcoming events, research opportunities, and initiatives, we invite you to complete our affiliation form or sign up to our mailing list.
