Congratulations to CMS affiliate Prof. Efrat Arbel on being awarded with the Kings Counsel designation for 2025.
The King’s Counsel (KC) designation for 2025 was awarded to 31 lawyers for making exceptional contributions to the legal profession in British Columbia. The designation is a provincial honour that recognizes contributions that strengthen the functioning and perception of the legal system. It allows appointees to add KC after their names to signal that they have been recognized by their peers for expertise and for making a significant contribution to the judicial system.
Efrat Arbel is an Associate Professor at the UBC Peter A. Allard School of Law. She holds an LLB from UBC and a doctorate from Harvard Law School, where she was a Canada Research Fellow. Her research focuses on immigration detention, refugee protection, and border governance, with significant influence on federal policy and precedent-setting judicial decisions. Arbel is also committed to advancing legal education and public engagement through innovative tools. She trains members of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, serves as a judge for the UBC Moot Court, and sits on the editorial board of the University of Oxford’s Border Criminologies research group.
