Dr. Başak Kale

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations, Middle East Technical University, Turkey. I am also a fellow of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence Center for European Studies coordinating the Migration Research Program (METUMIR). My research interests include Europeanization of migration policies, refugees, and recently focusing more on Syrian refugee protection and burden sharing. Currently, for the FEUTURE project (H2020), I lead the research and deliverables on the focal issue asylum. I became one of the European Marshall Memorial Fellows (EMMF) of the German Marshall Fund of the US, before becoming a fellow of the Turkey-EU Future Forum, Mercator Foundation. Outside academia, I acted as one of the founding members of Turkey’s first migration and asylum research specific NGO, IGAM while consulting on migration-related topics for various international organizations including UNHCR, Council of Europe, OSCE and UN.
