Small Grants for Faculty-Graduate Student Research Collaborations

Applications are now open for the annual CMS Small Grants for Faculty-Graduate Student Research Collaborations competition. This initiative will support migration and mobilities research collaborations between faculty and graduate student affiliates.

This grant will provide Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) funds for research projects that will lead to faculty-graduate student co-authored papers to be submitted to the CMS Working Paper Series. Awards are capped at $3,500.

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2023/24 Small Grants Research Collaborations.

Who is eligible:  

  • All CMS-affiliated UBC faculty and postdoctoral fellows may apply. Please click here to check if you are a CMS Affiliate. 
  • All GRAs funded by the project have to be enrolled in a UBC graduate program for the duration of the award and are expected to be affiliated with CMS. 

Key Dates:  

  • November 15, 2023 (11:59 PDT): Deadline to receive complete application materials. Incomplete applications will not be considered. 
  • December 11, 2023: Successful applicants will be notified  

Awards are competitive and made based on the following criteria: 

  • Potential to enhance CMS’s reputation for research excellence 
  • Potential to support meaningful faculty-graduate student research collaboration, including opportunities for research skill development and co-authorship 
  • Potential to produce impactful scholarly work 
  • Interdisciplinary collaborations are particularly welcome (interdisciplinarity is not required to apply) 

Conditions of award: 

  • GRA appointments can be processed starting January 1, 2024, and funds must be spent by June 30, 2024. Funds unspent by this date will revert back to CMS. 
  • Eligible expenses: GRA salaries (to be paid at an hourly rate no lower than $39 ($34.44/hr+13% benefits)
  • By accepting the award, the award holder commits to submitting a project-based manuscript, co-authored with the GRA, to the CMS Working Paper Series. The manuscript submission deadline will be mutually agreed upon prior to the issuing of funds. All manuscripts will undergo editorial review. Publishing a paper as part of the series does not preclude publication elsewhere. 

How to apply: 

Proposals should include 

  1. A one-page, single-spaced project description, including:
    • Project summary (including goals and scholarly contributions)
    • Work/tasks to be performed by the GRA, including opportunities for research skill development and co-authorship as well as mentoring arrangements (please indicate if you have a student in mind for the position) 
    • Description of interdisciplinary aspects of the project (if applicable)
    • If the funded work is part of a larger project, an explanation of what the funded work contributes to the larger project
  2. Budget (total number of hours required, to be paid at $34.44/hr + 13% benefits = $39/hr)
  3.  Project timeline, including proposed manuscript submission date to CMS Working Paper Series

Adjudication Process:

Applications will be assessed by a review committee composed of CMS Executive Committee members. The Committee will award both partial and full awards. Details about the CMS Working Paper Series will be announced soon.
