President’s Academic Excellence Initiative (PAEI) position in Migration
The Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) invites applications for the President’s Academic Excellence Initiative (PAEI) tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in migration to begin July 1, 2022. As an area of inquiry related to some of the most pressing issues of our times, we seek a scholar whose study of migration employs theoretical and ethnographic approaches that engage with one or more of the following: the images and media mobilizing strong sentiments about migration and mobility; the environmental contexts and/or health consequences of human migrations; critical perspectives on humanitarianism; and/or transformations of spiritual and religious realms brought about by mobility. We are particularly interested in anthropologists whose work on migration intersects with emerging and long-term strengths in our department, including in the study of: gender and sexuality; material culture; expressive cultures; linguistic anthropology; climate justice; indigeneity; refugees and citizenship; and social inequality. While the geographic area is open, we especially aim to build regional expertise in Asia, including South and East Asia.
The Department has a long tradition of community engagement and collaboration with the people with whom we conduct research and welcomes scholars whose record reflects a similar commitment. We are actively seeking to recruit from a diverse pool of applicants. We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous scholars and from minority groups underrepresented in post-secondary institutions in North America.
Candidates must be able to teach general courses in cultural anthropology along with courses in their area of expertise both at undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as mentor undergraduate and graduate students. They must also have a demonstrated record of outstanding teaching and an evident trajectory of excellent research. Candidates will be expected to do research in their area of expertise and provide service to the university. The start date for the position would be July 1, 2022. Candidates with a Ph.D. in Anthropology are invited to apply; applicants who will have a Ph.D. in hand by the start date will also be considered.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
