Migration and Mobility Art Competition – Cash Prizes

Call for Established and Emerging Artists: Competition at the UBC Centre for Migration Studies

**NEW DEADLINE: 5 PM PT, March 1, 2021**

The UBC Centre for Migration Studies wishes to open a conversation with artists on migration and mobility, and is inviting both established and emerging artists to submit a maximum of two artworks for a juried competition with two cash prizes. The competition is open to anyone.

One prize will be awarded for an artwork on migration: CAD $1,500
One prize will be awarded for an artwork on mobility: CAD $1,500

There will also be two honourable mentions for each prize.

One honourable mention will be awarded for an artwork on migration: CAD $750
One honourable mention will be awarded for an artwork on mobility: CAD $750

We will consider migration and mobility as they are intended broadly and as they are drawn from any historical periods or geographical areas. Look through our website for further information on the terminology and research areas.

Artwork Criteria

  • We will only accept artworks in digital formats, such as photography, illustrations, film and video clips, comics and graphic narratives, and web-based works.
  • We will consider any original unpublished artworks.
  • The winning artworks and honourable mentions are expected to be featured on the Centre’s website with the artists’ consent.
  • Entry in the competition means that the artists give consent to the Centre to feature their works digitally on the website if they receive the prize or an honourable mention. The Centre may want to use the winning artworks for other future purposes as well, pending artists’ permission.

Display/Public Access
Artworks will be featured on the UBC Centre for Migration Studies website for several months in the spring of 2021, and may also be archived on this website for future access.

Selection
The submissions will be evaluated by a jury consisting of members of the UBC Centre for Migration Studies and selected visual and/or digital media scholars. The selection criteria include:
•    Strength and creativity of the submitted work
•    The work’s relevance and originality in addressing migration and mobility
•    The appropriateness of digital formats for a web presence
•    Willingness to give consent to be featured on UBC Migration website

How to Apply
•    Submit your works to Han Fei (competition facilitator) at hfei@student.ubc.ca before 5PM PT on March 1, 2021.
•    Specify which prize you are applying for. Artists may submit different artworks for consideration for both prizes. But they will not submit multiple works for any of the two prizes, or submit an identical work for both prizes.
•    The submission package should include the following items and must be a single pdf no larger than 10MB.
•    Artwork title, media, and year of production
•    Résumé (1-2 page) together with a brief artist’s statement of your submission (250 words maximum)
•    The submission itself. If the submission is a video clip or a film, a link must be provided for viewing.
