Mentor-in-Residence Program

The Mentor-in-Residence Program offered graduate students the opportunity to discuss their research or academic journey with an experienced migration scholar in a supportive, one-on-one setting.

Recognizing that the study of migration and mobilities can take place through many disciplinary lenses and is also interdisciplinary in nature, CMS maintained a Mentor-in-Residence Program to support CMS graduate student affiliates.

Dr. Rima Wilkes, Professor and Graduate Student Chair in the Department of Sociology at UBC, was the primary mentor, providing advice and support for students navigating graduate studies in migration research. She was available for informal conversations with interested graduate students and led a discussion on professional and academic development during a Grad Student Power Hour Session.

It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss your research or graduate studies with someone who understands the experience but is not directly involved in your work.

The Mentor-in-Residence program was folded into the Graduate Fellows Program (2022-2024), where each Grad Fellow was matched with a CMS faculty mentor from outside the student’s home department. These initiatives are now included in the core seminar (ASTU 505) for the Graduate Certificate in Migration Studies.
