Submissions Closed
The UBC Centre for Migration Studies, in collaboration with UBC Okanagan, invites proposals for the 2025 CMS Research Conference, taking place May 1-2, 2025, at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
This year’s theme is “Migration, Mobilities, and Changing Political Landscapes.”
Concept & Format
This third annual conference on new research in migration studies welcomes presentation proposals from CMS affiliates that are faculty, postdoctoral fellows, or current graduate students in the Lower Mainland or at UBC Okanagan. Only academic affiliates are eligible. The conference embodies our shared goals of fostering exchange among migration scholars, building a network across disciplines and career levels, and deepening relationships between the two UBC campuses.
This year’s theme is “Migration, Mobilities, and Changing Political Landscapes.” The conference will take place in person from May 1-2, 2024, at the UBC Vancouver campus – the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam). Along with panel presentations, the conference will feature a keynote documentary screening with filmmaker discussion, and a roundtable event related to scholarly professional development.
Proposal Themes
We encourage submissions that focus on migration, mobilities, and current changing political landscapes, or on how historical patterns shed light on these. Applicants may submit proposals on other migration topics as well. After the adjudication and confirmation process, the accepted proposals will be organized into thematic panels.
Selection
Proposals will be selected based on the quality of the submitted abstract, its relevance to the conference theme, and complementarity with other submissions. Submissions will be adjudicated by the content co-leads for the conference (a CMS Co-Director and a UBCO faculty member). Successful applicants will be invited to submit a developed paper (due by April 7, 2025) and present in-person at the conference May 1-2, 2024.
Successful applicants from UBCO will receive $500 for travel support from the UBCO Provost’s Office, and will also be provided 2 nights of on-campus accommodations at the conference.
