GRA Job Title: Editorial Assistant
Organization: UBC Centre for Migration Studies
Salary: $35/hr + benefits ($5,880 total over duration of position)
Duration of position: February 2022 – March 2023
Job Description:
The Editorial Assistant is responsible for supporting the editorial management of the Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) Working Paper Series. Working papers share research-in-progress of CMS affiliates and are meant to invite scholarly discussion and feedback. (More details regarding the Working Paper Series are available on the CMS website). The Editorial Assistant will work under the direction of the Working Paper Series Editors, Dr. Antje Ellermann, Dr. Matthew Wright, and Dr. Gaoheng Zhang. They will liaise between the Series editors and authors, assist with the review process, and prepare manuscripts for publication. As Editorial Assistant, the graduate student will gain editorial skills and insights into academic publishing. The successful applicant should expect to edit 12 – 15 papers over the course of 13 months with occasional work periods of greater intensity.
Responsibilities:
- Copyedit, proofread and format all Working Paper Series submissions using Microsoft Office and Adobe technologies and in accordance with the CMS Working Paper Series Style Guide
- Review working papers for clarity, spelling, grammar, punctuation, logic, and consistency, and make sure copy is free of typos
- Be another set of eyes to make sure all accepted papers adhere to style guidelines.
- Coordinate with authors and Series Editors on deadlines and timelines in order to ensure smooth workflow, communication and timely delivery of finished products
Experience, Skills, and Qualifications:
- Excellent written communication skills with a superb understanding of Canadian English-language grammar, spelling, and syntax
- Proofreading skills with a sharp eye for detail
- Flexibility and ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
- Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems, queries, and unfamiliar text
- Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and be able to work on your own initiative
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite
- Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition) a plus
- Previous experience with academic publishing desirable
Requirements:
- Must be actively enrolled as a MA or PhD student at the University of British Columbia for the duration of the position (February 2022 – March 2023)
