PhD student Dhrihti Mehta, presenting at the International Doctoral Symposium: Global Perspectives on Social Problems, Policy, and Practice
From March 10–14, 2025, Dhriti Mehta—a PhD student in Political Science and a student in the CMS Graduate Certificate in Migration Studies program—was one of four UBC doctoral students selected to attend the International Doctoral Symposium: Global Perspectives on Social Problems, Policy, and Practice.
Hosted by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU)—CMS’s institutional partner for the CMS Research Conference 2024—the symposium is designed to foster international collaboration by bringing together PhD students from leading universities each year to exchange research ideas, build synergy around global challenges, and support professional growth and future scholarly partnerships. This year, it brought together emerging scholars from six global partner institutions: The University of British Columbia, The University of Chicago, Seoul National University, University of Michigan, Nanyang Technological University, and HKBU.
Representing the UBC Centre for Migration Studies, Dhriti joined her peers for a week of scholarly exchange, professional development, and field visits focused on contemporary social challenges and global policy responses. She presented on the Global Mobility panel, where she shared her research on high-skilled immigration policy. Her talk examined the role of adaptability in Canada’s skilled immigration system and how U.S. policy constraints shape Canadian approaches to attracting global talent.
Dhriti’s participation reflects CMS’s ongoing commitment to fostering international research partnerships and supporting early-career scholars tackling urgent questions in global migration.
