My research critically examines the concept of belonging. By exploring the biases, political motivations, and omissions, I suggest that popular belonging discourse is permeated by structures of power that coerce belonging under the threat of violence. I consider the workings of this power guided by Michel Foucault’s notion of power, Erich Fromm’s framework of having and being, as well as Slavoj Zizek’s metaphor of the post-modern permissive father. Through critical autoethnography, I suggest that non-belonging is a form of resistance and emphasize that it must be an equally valid option.
