My research focuses on the idea of ghost citizenship in Malaysia. Ghost citizens are folks who have no citizenship and are stateless but reside in their own country, where they have genuine ties and histories. Thus, they are ‘ghosted’ by their own state, resulting in no access to social services or ways of belonging. I aim to explore how the lack of citizenship status privileges certain groups of people in Malaysia and disadvantages the rest.
