Doctoral Symposium: Global Perspectives on Social Problems, Policy, and Practice
This doctoral symposium will provide the opportunity for selected doctoral students from four universities—The University of Chicago, Hong Kong Baptist University, Seoul National University, and The University of British Columbia—to present their work and engage in scholarly exchange, comparative analysis, and networking with their counterparts around the world.
Up to four doctoral students from each university will be selected based on the quality of the proposal, thematic focus, and its fit with other submissions. The symposium will be held over two days in December (15-16), preceded by three days (12-14) of programming in Seoul that will include site visits to local communities experiencing, and organizations addressing, contemporary social problems related to the themes outline above.
The UBC Centre for Migration Studies will provide financial support for one doctoral student who is affiliated with the Centre and whose proposed paper fits the theme of “migration, displacement, and refugees” to attend this symposium. The student will receive up to $1,700 or 75% (whichever is lower) of the cost. More details about expected costs and host travel arrangements can be found via the link below. We encourage interested doctoral students to seek further support from their supervisor or home department.
SUBMISSION DETAILS
Interested doctoral students should provide an abstract of the paper they wish to submit (500 words maximum). The abstract, which should indicate relevance to the suggested theme of “migration, displacement, and refugees”, will be adjudicated by an ad hoc committee including the CMS Director, CMS Research Manager and CMS Mentor-in-Residence.
The deadline for submission is October 24, 2022.
Paper abstracts should be submitted to manager.migration@ubc.ca with the subject heading “Seoul Doctoral Student Symposium submission”.
