Tori Shucheng Yang receives the Migration & Mobilities Best Graduate Student Paper Award with her paper titled “Rethinking Queer Migration: The Case of Skilled Chinese LGBTQ+ Migrants in North America.”

Tori Shucheng Yang is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia. Her research interests include transnational migration, gender and sexuality, and social theory. Her dissertation explores the intersectional identities and migration trajectories of Chinese LGBTQ+ migrants in the United States and Canada. Prior to joining UBC, Tori had an MA in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago and a BA in History and Economics from the University of Virginia.

Her paper, titled “Rethinking Queer Migration: The Case of Skilled Chinese LGBTQ+ Migrants in North America,” examines how the sexuality of skilled Chinese LGBTQ+ migrants in North America evolves throughout their migration journey, emphasizing the need for a broader understanding of how identity intersects with different modes of migration beyond sexual orientation.

In addition to the $400, her paper will be published in the CMS Working Paper Series (WPS), pending review and suggested revisions by WPS editors. Congratulations!
