We are no longer accepting submissions for the 2024 Best Graduate Student Paper on migration & mobilities competition.
CMS is pleased to offer a $400 award for the Best Graduate Student Paper on migration & mobilities. The competition is open to all CMS graduate student affiliates who are currently enrolled in a UBC graduate degree program. Eligible papers will focus on topics in migration, mobilities, and/or belonging. They may be based on a coursework assignment or original research, of which the student is the sole author. Submissions will be made via this website as a pdf file attachment accompanying the online application form (below). The award-winning paper will also be published in the CMS Working Paper Series (WPS), pending review and suggested revisions by WPS editors.

Paper Requirements:
The paper you submit should be a refined piece of finished writing, not a draft. This includes close attention to grammar, spelling, and formatting, along with content, argument, and writing style (though the latter are more important).
- The paper may be based on an assignment from coursework or on original research. Writing on in-progress research is acceptable, along as the paper itself stands complete.
- The student should be the sole author of the paper.
- The paper should not have been previously published.
- Length: 4000-5500 words (i.e., 16-22 pages), not including front matter, bibliography, end or footnotes, etc.
- Format: double-spaced, with one-inch margins and a standard 12pt font
- Citation and reference style guide: Any standard citation and reference formatting style is acceptable as long as it is consistent throughout the paper.
- Title page: Please include a title page in your paper, regardless of whether your chosen style guide requires one. It should include your name, degree program and rank, paper title, and email address.
- Abstract: Please include an abstract in your paper (no more than 200 words), regardless of whether your chosen style guide requires one.
- File format: The paper should be a pdf file with the file name adhering to this template: BestPaper2024_Lastname.pdf
Further Information:
Applicants will be notified of the competition outcome by April 11, 2024. It will take approximately 3 weeks for the award money to be issued after this date.
